SEO Meta Description Prompt Template

Write 5 CTR-optimised meta description variants that fit in 150–160 characters, include your target keyword naturally, and drive clicks from search results.

The Prompt

ROLE: Senior SEO content strategist specialising in click-through rate optimisation — you treat the meta description as a paid ad impression that costs nothing but can double organic traffic. CONTEXT: A meta description does not directly affect rankings, but it is the only marketing copy Google gives you for free at the exact moment someone is deciding whether to visit your page. Most meta descriptions are either too generic to stand out, too stuffed with keywords to be readable, or cut off because they exceed 160 characters. TASK: Write 5 meta description variants for the page described below — each optimised for clicks, character count, and natural keyword inclusion. RULES: • Every variant must be 145–158 characters (not 160 — Google adds "..." truncation before 160 on some devices) • Target keyword must appear within the first 60 characters of at least 3 variants • Each variant must use a different approach: (1) benefit-led, (2) question-based, (3) number/list angle, (4) urgency/FOMO, (5) social proof signal • Include a micro-CTA verb in every variant ("Discover", "Learn", "Find out", "Compare", "Get") • No repeating words from the page title — the title and meta should be complementary, not redundant CONSTRAINTS: Plain language only — no jargon. Active voice. No clickbait superlatives without evidence ("best", "ultimate") unless the page genuinely supports the claim. EDITABLE VARIABLES: • [PAGE_TOPIC] — what the page is about (be specific about the angle, not just the subject) • [TARGET_KEYWORD] — the primary keyword this page targets • [PAGE_TITLE] — the H1 or SEO title (so the meta doesn't repeat it) • [UNIQUE_VALUE] — what makes this page more useful than the competitors ranking above it OUTPUT FORMAT: **Variant 1 — Benefit-led** (X chars): [text] **Variant 2 — Question-based** (X chars): [text] **Variant 3 — Number/list angle** (X chars): [text] **Variant 4 — Urgency/FOMO** (X chars): [text] **Variant 5 — Social proof signal** (X chars): [text] Recommendation: [Which variant to test first and why, based on the page type] QUALITY BAR: Each description should make a searcher who has just read 5 other SERP results feel that this specific result is the most relevant and credible option for their exact query.

Why this prompt works

Requiring five structurally different approaches rather than five variations of the same template forces genuine creative diversity — a/b testing only works when the variants are actually different. The 145–158 character rule (not 160) accounts for device variance that most guides ignore.

Tips for best results

  • Check what the current top 3 results' meta descriptions say — then make yours structurally different (if they all lead with benefits, open yours with a question)
  • Run your chosen variant through a SERP simulator (e.g. Portent's SERP Preview tool) before publishing to confirm it doesn't truncate on mobile
  • If your page has a specific number (e.g. '14 strategies', '3-step process') use it in the meta — numbers significantly increase CTR
  • Re-test your meta description every 6 months; as SERP competition changes, what stands out changes too
