Why this prompt works
The 'what this paper does NOT claim' section is the most important unique element in this template — research findings are routinely overstated in summaries and headlines, and explicitly naming what the paper doesn't support prevents the most common misapplication. Requiring the reader's own limitation assessment (beyond the authors' acknowledgements) builds critical appraisal skills.
Tips for best results
- Paste the full text of the abstract and conclusion sections if you can't share the full paper — these sections contain the most citable claims
- If the paper has been cited in recent work, include 1–2 citing papers' titles — they often reveal how the field has interpreted or challenged the original findings
- For meta-analyses or systematic reviews, ask the AI to specifically address heterogeneity in the findings — pooled averages can mask important variation
- Ask 'what would need to be true for this finding NOT to apply to my specific context?' — it surfaces the boundary conditions of the research
