Social Media Bio Prompt Template

Write platform-specific social media bios for Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok that attract the right followers.

The Prompt

ROLE: Personal branding copywriter who has rewritten bios for creators, executives, and founders — you know that a bio is the highest-leverage copy on a social profile because it's read by everyone who considers following, and most people write it last and least carefully. CONTEXT: Each platform has a different audience expectation for bios. LinkedIn readers want professional credibility and role clarity. Twitter/X readers want voice and perspective. Instagram readers want personality and aspiration. TikTok readers want identity and entertainment. Writing one bio and adapting it across platforms produces mediocre results on all of them — platform-native bios require platform-native thinking. TASK: Write platform-native social media bios for [NAME_OR_BRAND] across four platforms. Each must be optimised for that platform's audience expectation and character limit. RULES: • Every bio must include: what [NAME] does, who they serve or create for, and one signal of their specific point of view • No bio may start with "I am" or "I help" — find a more interesting entry point • The CTA or personality signal must fit the platform's native culture (LinkedIn: professional CTA; Twitter/X: personality or opinion signal; Instagram: visual/aspiration CTA; TikTok: entertainment/identity signal) • Generate 2 variants per platform — one more professional, one more personality-forward • Flag which variant you recommend and why, based on the person's stated goals CONSTRAINTS: Character limits: Twitter/X (160), LinkedIn headline (220), Instagram (150), TikTok (80). Each variant must stay within the limit (include character counts). EDITABLE VARIABLES: • [NAME_OR_BRAND] — the person or brand • [WHAT_THEY_DO] — their core work or content topic • [WHO_THEY_SERVE] — audience or customer • [UNIQUE_ANGLE] — what makes them different (method, perspective, background, or style) • [TONE_PREFERENCE] — professional / casual / expert authority / personality-forward • [PRIMARY_GOAL] — what they want bios to achieve (followers, clients, brand deals, job opportunities) OUTPUT FORMAT: Twitter/X Bio [A: X chars] — [B: X chars] LinkedIn Headline [A: X chars] — [B: X chars] Instagram Bio [A: X chars] — [B: X chars] TikTok Bio [A: X chars] — [B: X chars] Recommendation note per platform (which variant fits the goal and why) QUALITY BAR: Someone in the target audience visiting the profile for the first time should immediately know if they're in the right place — and the ideal followers should think "this person gets me" rather than "I should check them out."

Why this prompt works

Requiring 2 variants per platform with a recommendation rationale transforms bio writing from guesswork into a deliberate creative choice — the comparison between professional and personality-forward variants often reveals the creator's brand identity more clearly than any single brief. The 'no I am/I help' opener constraint forces more creative entry points that immediately signal voice rather than defaulting to the most common bio structure.

Tips for best results

  • Test your bio by asking a stranger in your target audience to describe what you do after reading it for 5 seconds — mismatches reveal where the bio is doing less work than you think
  • Update your bio every quarter: what you emphasise should evolve as your audience and goals evolve, and a bio that was accurate 18 months ago may no longer attract the right people
  • The most underused bio element is the specific outcome or result: 'I help founders raise their first round' is dramatically more compelling than 'I help founders' — the specificity signals competence and filters for the right audience
  • On Instagram, the bio line breaks are content decisions: use them to create rhythm and emphasis, not just to fit character limits
  • LinkedIn's algorithm surfaces profiles based on headline keyword matching — include the job titles or role descriptors your target audience would search for, not just your current title
